NCCCLRA Awards 2012 – April 2, 2012 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical CC
Good afternoon. It has been my pleasure to chair the awards committee for the past 7 years. I would like to take a moment to thank the members of my committee for their assistance in making the selections this year: Amy Burns and Gena Craig from CPCC and Christy Earp from Wilkes CC.
The NCCCLRA Awards Committee held a 50/50 raffle at the conference again this year to raise money for the scholarship fund. The committee raised $148.00! Deborah Foster, librarian at Fayetteville Tech and Treasurer of NCCCLRA, had the winning ticket and received $74.
Each year, the North Carolina Community College Learning Resources Association seeks nominations for achievement, life membership and scholarship awards. We received several nominations this year for Life Membership. The Life Membership Award is presented to a person who has retired or is retiring from a learning resources center or library in the community college system of North Carolina or to a person who is in the Library Education profession; nominees have been active members of NCCCLRA during his/her career. The following individuals are now exempt from paying membership dues and have all privileges of active members except that of holding elected office:
Myra Blue, 2007-2008 NCCCLRA President, retired Director of the Libraryat Pamlico CC
Lynette Finch, Director at Nash, has over 40 continuous years of service to the library at Nash CC and has attended every LRA conference except for one!
Roxanne Davenport, recently retired Director of Library Services at Pitt CC, worked at NC Dept of Community Colleges’ Library Resources unit from 1982-2004
I will be sending certificates to these new Life Members!
Scholarships
The Scottie W. Cox Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, and the Mertys Bell Scholarship in the amount of $500, is awarded to nominees who are taking course work in the library field toward a degree or for professional development. Again, the awards committee received quite a few applications for scholarships. This year, the awards committee has selected the following recipients for the scholarships:
Mertys Bell Scholarship Award $500 – Lynette Kendrick
Ms.Kendrick is currently enrolled at the University of Maine at Augusta and is working on a BS in Information and Library Services. She plans to continue her education and obtain a Master’s in Library Science. She currently works at Central Piedmont CC.
Scottie W. Cox Memorial Scholarship Award $1,000 – Carmen Harriman
Ms. Harriman Is working on her Master of Library Science at North Carolina Central University. She currently works at Western Piedmont Community College.
Conference Grant Last year, the Executive Board approved two conference grants. The purpose of the grant is to encourage professional development and participation by members in NCCCLRA activities. Applicants must be current NCCCLRA members who are presentlyemployed at a North Carolina Community College Library. The grant covers travel, lodging, conference registration fees and some incidental expenses up to $200. Each year one grant will be offered to a paraprofessional and one grant will be offered to a librarian. This year, we had three applicants; however we received no applications from paraprofessionals, so we only have one award. This year’s Conference Grant – Melanie Gnau. Ms. Gnau is a librarian at Roanoke-Chowan CC and has just become a member of the NCCCLRA.
Congratulations, everyone!
Respectfully submitted,
