Updates from libraries:

After introductions, there were updates from district libraries.  Gretchen Bell reported that Piedmont Community College will be holding an open house soon for their new facility which includes a coffee shop, conference rooms, study rooms with laptops, and a 30 student capacity instruction room.  In addition, Piedmont’s Caswell campus now has a full service library.

Donald Forbes reported that Guilford Technical Community College has a new Allied Health building plus two other new buildings.  The campus at Piedmont Triad International Airport is also expanding due to a new program involving Honda Jet.

E-books:

Michael Rose  presented information on E-books including those available through NCLive.  There was discussion of various types of E-books as well as E-book vendors and several free digital library projects.

MySpace in the Library:

Pat Leamon presented information on MySpace and social networking.  Most present were not in favor of blocking access to MySpace in the library.  There was discussion of its social and educational value to students, and the importance of “the Library as place”.  Some campuses have already blocked MySpace due to bandwidth consumption, while others are leaving it unblocked and adding bandwidth or using packet shapers to control the amount of bandwidth consumed by MySpace users.

General Discussion:

Uses for CIS software in the library:  Most present only use CIS software to block delinquent students from registering or receiving grades.  It is also used occasionally to look up students to determine if they are currently enrolled.

AV security:  Jenny Hock described doughnut shaped security tags for DVD’s and CD’s.

Meeting was adjourned at 12:30pm.
