LRA Report –
Harry Cooke
·
The upgrade to I-LINC will take place on December 16, 2004. This will result in a better presentation of
the catalog. The foreign language
components have also been added
·
OCLC access has been gained for all 58 institutions. Libraries need to check records in order to
prevent the loading of duplicate records.
The Cataloging Committee will be working on merging duplicate records in
the future. The new access also offers
an opportunity for weeding.
·
Sharing of materials via ILL
is also enabled by these developments.
Please note that the ILL Committee recently sent out guidelines.
·
Planning for the 2005 Annual Conference is
underway. If there is a topic you would like to see presented at the
conference, please send your ideas to Harry Cooke, Donald Forbes, or Dave
Goble. The conference needs 25 programs, and 30+ vendors. Last year, the annual conference attracted
approximately 150 attendees
·
LRA has a new website, http://www.nccclra.org, which lists officers
and members of the organization. Calvin Craig would like to complete a
directory listing staff members and their responsibilities, so please send
updated information to Calvin or Harry Cooke. Each district should be sending a
quarterly news update, and the district director is the reporter. The website also offers helpful links, and
the LRA Handbook and Constitution are coming soon. The old LRA website hosted by Fayetteville
will be taken down, and the new website will be listed on the state website.
·
LRA needs members to be willing to serve as
officers in the organization.
·
Harry Cooke would like to see LRA have divisions
like NCLA. Each division could then be
responsible for presenting programs at the annual conference.
·
The next LRA Executive Board meeting is December 9, 2005. The Board will be
discussing raising dues, scholarships and the 2005 annual conference.
II. CCCLA Report –
Dave Goble
- Last
year, CCCLA worked on obtaining additional funding for NC LIVE, and they
were able to reach the President’s Council.
- CCCLA
is working with Bill Randall (Associate Vice President for Learning
Technology at the NC Community College System office) on a possible
expansion budget for nest year.
This expansion budget may include more funding for NC LIVE, a
million dollars for e-resources (which should go to NC LIVE), and money to
study needs.
- CCCLA
is also trying to contact the academic advisor to Martin Lancaster to
discuss libraries and figure out the politics of lobbying for additional
funding.
- CCCLA
had a table at the community college instructor’s conference in Greensboro,
and made good contacts with faculty and vendors. The experience at the conference caused
CCCLA to realize the importance of working closing with the faculty
organization to help us get library issues heard.
- CCCLA
will be meeting to discuss priorities for the next year. In March or April, a half-day conference
with all directors will be held. Two important ideas will be discussed:
- Group
purchasing of databases: Dave
feels that we owe it our students and the citizens of North
Carolina to buy the best products at the best
possible price. The group will be
working on more consortial trials and purchases, much like the recent
Proquest deal.
- Cooperative
collection development for print resources, with an eye towards
developing “centers of excellence” in particular subject areas. Those centers would then share
materials with other libraries.
III. Announcements
- Harry
Cooke is running for NCLA treasurer.
- There
are staff development opportunities through Solinet, many of which can be
completed online. LRA will be
looking into supporting these opportunities.
- Montgomery
Community College is starting
CCLINC circulation in January.
- The
libraries at Central Piedmont
Community College now report
to the Associate Vice President for Technology/Chief Information Officer
rather than the Associate Vice President for Instruction.
- Cleveland
Community College recently
received a grant from their local Rotary for a Global Studies Room. The room will be housed within the
library and offer 30 computers.
- At Gaston
College, the Bio-Ed staff is
currently temporarily housed in the library.
- Stanly
Community College reports an
increase in student population and, as a result, the library is pushing
for additional space.
Respectfully submitted,
Jennifer Arnold
